Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" movie adaptation was obviously not announced as part of Warner Bros. - DC Comics lineup when the schedule was released last year.
The event immediately fueled speculations that the project was trashed. However, issues were soon clarified by Gaiman himself, taking to Tumblr to explain the real reason why "Sandman" was not part of the announcement.
"It's not a DC Comics film. It's a Vertigo film. That's a different slate of films, and a different announcement," Gaiman explained to a fan who asked on Tumblr.
Furthermore, David S. Goyer is optimistic that their attempt to bring the story of Morpheus The Lord of Dreams to the big screen would be successful as compared to previous efforts that failed.
"I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras, but the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team..." he said in an interview with Deadline.
Revealing that there is already "a draft" that "Warner Bros. is very happy with" and that the team is "moving forward, knock on wood."
While there has been no confirmed cast for Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" movie adaptation yet, "Dark Knight Rises" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name has been constantly linked in the project. He did confirm his involvement though, in previous interviews.
Deadline, also mentioned that he'll both be directing and starring in the upcoming film.
In his previous AMA in reddit, the 34-year-old actor-director shared his experience in working on the "Sandman" movie, while revealing its progress.
"Been doing a lot of work with David Goyer and Jack Thorne, working on the screenplay," he explained to a fan who asked an update about the movie.
"We've been doing our meetings at the DC office, which is a frickin rad place to work. Also just had a great conversation last week with David and Mr. Gaiman. Neil has been extremely big hearted with me, and he's the one I want to please most."
Meanwhile, Neil Gaiman previously expressed his desire to have "Thor" star Tom Hiddleston to star as Morpheus in the upcoming movie adaptation of "Sandman."
In his interview with the Radio Times, the 54-year-old award winning English author talked about the progress of the upcoming project, sharing his insights on who should play the iconic character.
"It's a funny thing with Morpheus. Again, it's that thing where you look around and think, 'Yes this person would be a fantastic person', and then time passes," Gaiman explained to the publication.
"There was a time Johnny Depp would've been a great Morpheus, but now he's too old and it's fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, 'wow, that's incredibly Morpheus'. And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up."
Since both Depp and Cumberbatch are both impossible to get involved in the project, Gaiman revealed his bet.
"Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I'm concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off."
Gaiman's statement immediately sparked rumors of the possible casting, however the award winning author quickly explained that there is no truth to the casting and that he was just joking.
"It's not true. It was a joke in an interview I'm afraid RT @PickleAM: Please oh please let it be true that@twhiddleston will play Morpheus!" Gaiman tweeted.
