For Good Or Not? Return Of [Spoiler] In 'Scandal' Season 4 Discussed By TV Series Creator Shonda Rhimes

| By

Going into the 13th episode of "Scandal" season 4 titled "No More Blood," several theories have been made when in it comes to the question, "Who's going to save, Olivia?" A lot of names were mentioned.

Some thought it will be Fitz (Tony Goldwin), some thought it will be Papa Pope (Rowan Morton). When the episode aired, fans were left surprised after it was revealed that the man who will eventually rescue Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is the character that hasn't appeared in the show since the first season.

Fan favorite Stephen Finch (Henry Ian Cusick) made a shocking return in "Scandal" season four episode 13. Cusick and his character left the show before the second season started. It was said that Finch left the gladiators to go live a normal life with his fiancee (who was never shown). Turns out, he is in St. Petersburg living an "awesome" life.

The episode and Cusick's return was well-received by fans. Now, the question is, is Stephen back in the show for good?

Talking to the Entertainment Weekly, series creator Shonda Rhimes said they were thinking of bringing Cusick back beyond "Scandal" season 4 episode 13. However, she didn't specify if they are already working on it. Right now, Cusick is still on CW's "The 100" where he is one of the lead stars.

"We had been thinking about the idea of him coming back actually for a long time," executive producer Shonda Rhimes said in an interview right after the last "Scandal" season 4 episode.

"As far as I know, he immediately said yes. It was an immediate, 'Absolutely,' and then he and I were on the phone together, which was nice."

As to how they pulled off that "Scandal" season 4 episode 13 shocker, Rhonda shared bringing Cusick back has been the solution they set ever since the time Olivia Pope was kidnapped.

"It had been our solution in this story because of the idea that we knew that he had never gone and been normal and because we knew he had been our idea of redemption," Rhimes said.

"It was the only sensible solution when you think about Olivia's life, where she's gone and where she's been. Nostalgically for her, I think she believes that he's safety and home, whether it's true or not. If you think about the fact that she has no family-her mother basically let her go and her father basically told her she didn't exist anymore for him-Stephen was the last of the Gladiators who had no beef with her in any way, shape or form. She hadn't abandoned him. There was no baggage there, so that was why."
