If you have seen recent "Gotham" episode guide, you are probably aware that next week will be one of the show's biggest and boldest episodes, yet. In the episode "The Blind Fortune Teller", fans will get to finally meet arguably the best Batman villain of all time, the Joker. But of course, you can't expect that kid to become the smiling murderous clown once he debut in the Fox TV series. Also, showrunner Bruno Heller cleared that that guy may not exactly be the Joker.
The clip in the "Gotham" episode guide featured a young who by all indications is the young version of the Joker. That guy is portrayed by Cameron Monaghan, known for his roles in "Shameless", "The Giver", and "Vampire Academy." Playing a role that has been portrayed by one of the most effective actors in the industry is accompanied by a a huge amount of pressure. The late Heath Ledger had the same role in "The Dark Knight" and the iconic DC villain has been attached to his name ever since. Now, for "Gotham" TV series, Monaghan, according to Heller, will portray it like his own and not as a homage to anybody.
"When the episode is aired, people will see it's not an imitation of somebody else or an homage to anyone. It's a performance in and of itself," the showrunner said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
As for the character, whose name is Jerome, Bruno Heller said fans should not get carried away by the similarity because it is not sure yet whether the young man will end up as The Joker.
"In the pantheon of villains, he's the dark king of this world, so it would be cheating the audience if we didn't get into that," he says. "On the other hand, as those who are deep into the mythology know, the actual Joker - the full-on villain himself - does not appear until after Batman appears. That's both a narrative opportunity and a narrative problem at the same time."
