Charles Manson has made headlines once again after 27-year-old Afton Elaine Burton announced her engagement to jailed killer. But before their marriage license expires, the 80-year-old cult head called it off after discovering her fiancee's real intentions on marrying him.
According to NY Post, Daniel Simone, who co-authored "The Retrial of Charles Manson" with Heidi Jordan Ley, reveals that Burton wanted to marry Manson to gain possession of his corpse and put it on public display to make some money.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Simone said the information originated with Frank Reichard, an inmate who "has a cell" near Manson's at California's Corcoran State Pris
Reichard passed the information through a letter sent to Ley, he said that he overheard a conversation between Burton and another inmate Craig Hammond, which they believed his co-conspirator
"He overheard them talking about their plan to find a way to get control of Manson's body when he passes on," Simone told The Huffington Post.
"When they could not persuade Manson to sign a legal document entitling them to his body upon his death, that's when they hatched Plan B."
Simone adds that Burton and Hammond had another plan to gain possession of Manson's corpse, and that is to marry the 80-yearld-old jailed killer.
"Do you know how [Hammond] made a joke about putting [Manson's] body on view and charge people to see him?" Reichard wrote in his letter.
"He may sound like he was kidding, but deep down he is really thinking about it. How did I end up knowing people like that?"
Burton refused to comment on Simone's revelation, and posted on her website the reason why the wedding didn't push through.
"Charlie and Star were not able to complete their wedding ceremony due to an unexpected interruption in logistics.... They plan on renewing the license, and things will move forward in the coming months."
