If ever the Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Manny Pacquiao fight does not push through, the American could reportedly still fight on May 2, his desired specific fight date.
Stephen Espinoza, general manager of Showtime to whom Floyd has a broadcast deal with, said the undefeated American fighter has the Filipino champ as the first choice for May 2 fight. However, if ever deals collapse, they are ready to name another boxer.
"He's definitely fighting on May 2, his first choice by far is Manny Pacquiao. If it becomes clear that that fight is not achievable, then he would move on to either Amir Khan or Miguel Cotto," said Espinoza in a report by the New York Daily News.
"He's made it clear to us that Pacquiao is still his No. 1 priority, and that's where all our energy is focused."
Espinoza also insisted that everything about the Floyd Mayweather Jr - Manny Pacquiao fight should be ironed out as soon as possible as May 2 is getting nearer.
"There is urgency to get this done and get it going, but we're not in a panic mode in terms of the calendar right now," Espinoza said.
Although he admits there are still so many rough edges, Espinoza said they working round the clock to smooth them out and that he is optimistic they will come up with a deal.
"I would say I'm optimistic that it can get done. We have work to do to bridge the gap on important issues, but the most important thing is that Floyd genuinely wants it and wants it badly, and from everything I've heard and seen, Manny wants the fight as well."
"No contracts have been signed yet, we're still in the discussion stage. A breakthrough could come any minute or it could take another week or two."
