Slated to be one of three "X Men" films to be released in 2016, "Deadpool" will star Ryan Reynolds as the "Merc with a Mouth."
The actor sat down with Yahoo to promote his upcoming movie "The Voices." He also elaborated on "Deadpool," saying the movie won't be like his previous superhero effort "Green Lantern."
"Well, script. When we shot Green Lantern, nobody auditioning for the role of Green Lantern was given the opportunity to read the script, because the script didn't exist," said Reynolds.
"I'm not complaining about it - it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and if I were to go back and retrace my steps, I would probably do everything the exact same way. But script, that's what's different on this one."
He also revealed that the script for "Deadpool" was already in place when it was leaked back in 2009.
"We've had a script for three years. The script got leaked, and people even loved that. That says a lot - if you can create a script around a comic-book character that is directly within the canon of the character and be embraced. That's a huge step in the right direction. I've since learned that a lot of superhero movies don't really have a fully functioning draft of the screenplay ready until they're already well into shooting."
For years the title remained dormant beacause studio executives didn't quite see the potential of comic book movies. Fast forward to today, "Deadpool" has been given a Feb. 12, 2016 release date - which means that filming will start in a few months.
Tim Miller is the one helming the project, reportedly his directorial debut. While he has no film credits to his name yet, he is best known as a visual effects artist and the founder of the effects company Blur Studio.
"Deadpool" will be followed by "X Men: Apocalypse" on May 27, 2016, the third Wolverine movie on March 3, 2017, and an untitled "X Men" film (rumored to be "X Men" versus "Fantastic Four") on Jul. 13, 2018.
