There is so much buzz surrounding the upcoming erotic romance drama movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" which is based on novel of the same name written by E.L. James.
The film is a Valentine's Day offering from Universal Pictures and stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia "Ana" Steele. So far, the movie's official trailer released six months ago has 47 million views and counting.
Many are excited for the release of the the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie adaptation. Thus, expert expect it to rake in a lot of money in the box office. However, for some activists, the moviegoers should boycott the movie and instead donate their money reserved for the film to an organization helping battered wives. The group also claims that 50 Shades only promote domestic abuse.
"Real women don't end up like Anastasia; they often end up in a women's shelter, on the run for years or dead," said the National Center on Sexual Exploitation which also acts as the sponsor of the #50DollarsNot50Shades campaign that help domestic violence programs get funds. This was first reported by the Washington Post.
"The money you would have spent on movie tickets and a baby-sitter or movie tickets, popcorn and drinks will go towards serving victims of abusive relationships like the one glamorized in the 50 Shades series," said the campaign's Facebook community page. "Hollywood doesn't need your money; abused women do."
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation is not the first to criticize the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie. On Jan. 15 this year, anti-pornography watchdog group Morality in Media contested the the Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed film's R-Rating. It claimed the R-Rating "severely undermines the violent themes in the film and does not adequately inform parents and patrons of the film's content."
The group wants to change the MPAA rating for "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie. Morality in Media wants written beside the movie's rating:
"Promotes torture as sexually gratifying, graphic nudity, encourages stalking and abuse of power, promotes female inequality, glamorizes and legitimizes violence against women."
