It was announced late last year that director Roberto Orci was dropping out of "Star Trek 3" and was being replaced by "Fast & Furious" helmer Justin Lin. Shortly, it was reported that Simon Pegg was co-writing the new script with Lin.
Orci was on board the first two films as a producer where "Trek 3" could have been his directorial debut. Here's an early interview of him explaining the plot in a podcast with Humans From Earth.
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series," he said.
"They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."
Things have been slow on the "Star Trek 3" front - that was until a name of a certain actor came up, apparently being cast as the movie's baddie.
Film Divider claims that "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston is a contender for a villain role in the upcoming movie, adding that the actor is in talks with Paramount. It would make sense as Bryan Cranston is no stranger playing these roles; Heisenberg in "Breaking Bad", Vilos Cohaagen in 2012's "Total Recall", he was even rumored to play Lex Luthor in "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice."
If Bryan Cranston pushes through with the role, Kirk and the rest of the Enterprise might well be taking on their most powerful villain yet.
But until it is set in stone and Paramount confirms this news, all these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
"Star Trek 3" is reported to start filming in April, aiming at a Jul. 8, 2016 release date.
