Can there be Sherlock Holmes without a Dr. John Watson?

Months after Robert Downey Jr. has confirmed the third installment to the 2009 film "Sherlock Holmes," Jude Law who portrays Dr. John Watson shares bits about "Sherlock Holmes 3" development, including reprising his role and script details. Will this lead to announcement of a release date soon?

In a recent interview by Extra TV, Jude Law was reportedly approached and asked about the developments of "Sherlock Holmes 3." He said, "We'll see. I haven't been approached."

While Robert Downey Jr. who plays lead character Sherlock Holmes in the films have already confirmed development late last year-coincidentally confirming the reprisal of his role, why does Jude Law now say that he hasn't been approached?

While promoting his latest film "Anna Karenina" back in 2012, Jude Law shed light on the confirmed "Sherlock Holmes 3," and where development has gone so far, but sadly no release date has been revealed. Jude Law explained further and said, "I mean there's certainly talk of it and I know there's a script being played around with, but Downey's a busy boy and I'm a busy boy so we'll see. But we want to [do another one]. We're a very happy team and we have a lot of fun and we also think there's still a lot of legs in the duo."

The first "Sherlock Holmes" film was released in 2009, while the sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" had a 2011 release date. It was in the same year that "Sherlock Holmes 3" was said to be in the works, and come 2013 Jude Law had already teased that a script is on the way. However, how come Jude Law is now being uncertain of reprising his role? Are there more issues in development than has been reported? Will Warner Bros. announce a release date for "Sherlock 3" soon?
