Calling all parents and nannies out there; around 4 million Bumbo Baby Seats are being recalled after nearly two dozen reports of infant skull fractures.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) babies can wiggle out of the floor seats that are made in South Africa. Consumers who have these baby seats are asked to stop using the seats and contact Bumbo for a free repair kit that includes a restraint belt and instructions on how to safely use the seat.
Four years ago, Kevin Lamm told ABC News his son, Dylan, fell out of a Bumbo on a table, cracked his head in two places and almost died on the way to the hospital.
In 2007, the company issued a recall for the seats to add new labels warning against using them on raised surfaces. At the time, the CPSC had 28 reports of young children falling out of the seats, including three skull fractures. In November 2011, the CPSC issued a new warning, pointing out the reports of floor injuries. It also worked with the company on a remedy: the seatbelt fix that was announced Monday, nine months after the November warning.
A range of big-name retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Best-Buy Co. and Target Corp., are teaming up to create a company that will give customers another way to make purchases: with their cellphones. The businesses said Wednesday that the new company, Merchant Customer Exchange, is developing a mobile application that will be available for nearly any smartphone. The app is expected to integrate a variety of coupons, rebates and loyalty programs.
In a statement, the company said it was adding a restraint belt to enhance the safety of children using the Bumbo seat.
"The restraint belt will help prevent children from getting out of or falling from the seat when it is used as intended: on the floor with adult supervision and never on raised surfaces," said the statement. "The health and safety of children using the Bumbo Baby Seat are our top priorities."
