Talks of a "Zoolander" sequel has been thrown around since 2008. The project has been back-and-forth dormant and progressing since then. At one point, even Penelope Cruz was reported joining the cast.
But recent reports reveal that the follow up to 2001's hit comedy is indeed moving forward with a script already in place, rumored to be written by Justin Theroux and "Zoolander" himself, Ben Stiller.
Back in 2011, Stiller gave us a primer on what can be expected in the sequel in an interview with Empire Magazine.
"It's ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don't want to give away too much, but it's basically Derek and Hansel ten years later - though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime," said the actor. "Their lives have changed and they're not really relevant anymore. It's a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he's expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way."
Stiller's wife, Christine Taylor who appeared in the first film as investigative reporter Matilda Jeffries and Zoolander's love interest is coming back for the sequel. She let a few details slip in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"I can tell you that I'm involved, but that's all I can say," the actress said. "I can tell you it's happening, but I can't tell you where Matilda's at and where their relationship is at. It's all top secret!"
The original story follows Derek Zoolander, a dim-witted male model who after three consecutive years of winning the "Male Model of The Year Award" is beaten by a newcomer called Hansel. Derek starts to search for a new meaning in his life when top designer Mugatu offers him a comeback to save his career. Little did he know that Mugatu has a bigger plan for Zoolander, brainwashing him into killing the Malaysian Prime Minister.
