"The Americans" season 3 premiere episode aired today.
The FX spy drama series set during the Cold War is somehow unique compared to other political series. What makes it more interesting is the fact that it highlights the relationship between Russia and the United States.
It is no secret that these two countries have misunderstanding when it comes to economy or politics. Some people also can't help but connect the recent events to the show.
One of which is the arrest of Russian bank employee Evgeny Buryakov who US authorities claim is spying in the country for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).
Buryakov and two other men, believed to be official representatives from Russia, were suspected of conniving to get intelligence that will be used by Moscow. It is not just common people who think of them like some kind of spy show characters, even major TV executive producers.
Before "The Americans" season 3 premiere, EP Joel Fields and series creator Joe Weisberg talked about the Evgeny Buryakov arrest and thought, Russians might have been watching their show all along.
"Truthfully, our first question [after Buryakov's arrest] was, we wonder if they were watching the show," Fields said in an interview with the Entertainment Weekly.
Weisberg adds, "They must've been watching the show. They had to be."
"Are those guys, in their cell, saying, 'Look, Wednesday night, we have one request?'" Fields jokes, as if saying Buryakov wishes he can watch "The Americans" season 3 premiere.
"That's what's going to get them to talk, I think. Maybe that was why they arrested them before the premiere, because they knew they'd have that leverage over them."
In case you don't know, you better binge-watch the first two seasons if you still have time. The FX show, which stars real-life partners Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, is about two KGB agents who posed as husband and wife in America and started a family while juggling their job as agents from Russia as the two countries are in a Cold War.
