"The Americans" season 3 premiere episode airs tonight with show protagonists Philipp and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) about to face similar but larger dilemmas.
In the first two seasons of the FX spy series, the difference between the two's personality and way of getting things done are apparent that most of the time, they inconvenient them.
In the new season, misunderstanding will just pile up, especially on how they will deal with their rebellious daughter Paige (Holly Taylor).
Is Paige going to be a KGB agent? Will Elizabeth and Philipp give their daughter away to their bosses? This is one of the dilemma of the Jennings couple when "The Americans" season 3 premiere.
As for Keri Russell, her character's different personality compared to Matthew Rhys's is what makes her stand out and that will play a huge role in their decision regarding their daughter's future.
"I love that aspect of (Elizabeth), I love her as a woman, she's absolutely unapologetic about what she believes. It's rare for the characters I get to play, for sure," Russell said in an interview with the Toronto Sun.
"Philip is so understanding emotionally and more social, and Elizabeth just believes what she believes. And yes, it does absolutely inform this season," she added.
Although Elizabeth's outlook is different compared to Philipps', Russell said it is a testament of how their personal relationship is improving.
"She is being enormously patient, as patient as she can be," Russell said. "She sees it's a struggle for Philip, and that speaks to her growth in their relationship.
"I don't look at it like I'm recruiting this teenager to do what I do and to turn tricks with strangers in a hotel room. But Elizabeth would really believe that you should know who you are. How do you navigate the world if you don't know who you are?"
"The Americans" season 3 premiere episode will see at least four-month time jump. Aside from Rhys and Russell, the show also stars Noah Emmerich as Stan Beeman, Annet Mahendru as Nina Sergeevna and Alison Wright as Martha Hanson.
