With the Olympics coming to an end this Sunday, August 12, time is running out for the top nations to make their mark at the 2012 Olympics. Considering what matches still remain, it appears the United States stands a greater opportunity of raking in more gold medals than their top rival, China. There is the men's and women's basketball gold medal matches this weekend, as well as women's volleyball.
The women's volleyball has been heating up. Regardless of who wins the London gold, Kessy and Ross will become the new No. 1 team among Americans. Walsh Jennings doesn't yet know who she'll play with after these Olympics end, but her partnership won't immediately be superior to Kessy and Ross'. A gold medal in their Olympic debut would only make Kessy and Ross' new No. 1 status more definitive. They appreciate all that May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings have done for the sport of beach volleyball, but Kessy and Ross would love nothing more than to hand them their first loss at the Olympics in their final match together.
Rounding out the top five is the United Kingdom at No. 3 with 24 gold medals, South Korea with 12 and the Russian Federation with 11.
