Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Robocop - these are just some of the movies that made their triumphant return to the big screen. Another movie that will be getting a reboot is John Carpenter's classic from 1981 "Escape From New York".
The story is set in futuristic Manhattan and follows Snake Plissken (played by Kurt Russel), a former U.S. special forces soldier convicted of attempting to rob the Federal Reserve. He's pulled out of prison to retrieve the president whose plane crash landed in Manhattan - now a maximum security prison walled off from the rest of New York. If he manages to resuce the president within 24 hours, Plissken is given full pardon from his sentence.
An remake with Gerard Butler was attempted not too long ago; Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy were also rumored in contention of playing the main role.
Late last year, there were rumors that Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam was to star as the eye-patched antihero (via Producer Booster):
"the film will be much more focused on a team of characters, rather than just Plissken as the main protagonist. The flick will follow Plissken as he "traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President,"
Screen Rant reports that Fox has aqcuired the rights to John Carpenter's film and is in development; Carpenter is still involved with the remake as an executive producer. According to Deadline, the movie is without yet a script and will start from scratch.
What about you readers? Who would you like to see playing Snake Plissken in the upcoming remake?
