As the battle of smartphones moving to the next step, just that time Samsung is planning to bring a phone with 4 GB RAM facility. Beside Samsung, lot of other companies will also bring smartphones with 4 GB RAM this year.
The South Korean electronics giant has started to mass produce 8 gigabit (GB) low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM based on 20-nanometer (nm) process technology paving way for 4GB mobile RAM. According to the company, the new 8GB LPDDR4 chip allows a 4 gigabyte (GB) LPDDR4 package to be created.
In a post on its official blog, Samsung states that due to an I/O (Input/Output) data rate of up to 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps), which is two times faster than a typical DDR3 DRAM used in PCs, the new RAM module is capable of supporting UHD (4K) video recording and playback and continuous shooting of high-resolution images with over 20MP.
"By initiating production of the 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4, which is even faster than the DRAM for PCs and servers and consumes much less energy, we are contributing to the timely launch of UHD, large-screen flagship mobile devices," explains Joo Sun Choi, Samsung's EVP of memory sales and marketing. "As this major advancement in mobile memory demonstrates, we will continue to closely collaborate with global mobile device manufacturers to optimize DRAM solutions, making them suitable for next-generation mobile OS environments."
Despite all that performance it has the lowest power memory option available for large-screen smartphones and tablets with just 1.1V Voltage. So it should simultaneously boost the performance of devices and be kinder on their batteries. Given that it's faster than DDR3 DRAM and designed with tablets in mind it could also feasibly find its way on to computers, ushering in super laptops.
