'Constantine' TV Series News Update: Matt Ryan Not Afraid Of The 'Flash' And 'Arrow'

| By

DC Comics is lording television right now. They've got Arrow which is now on its third season, The Flash which is one of the biggest hits this fall, Batman prequel Gotham of Fox and NBC TV series Constantine which many critics are raving about. Next year, add Teen Titans of TNT , CBS Supergirl and iZombie of CW Network on the list of DC shows on the boob tube. The plethora of comics-based shows on television is a treat to many fans. However, some are thinking, it might also be a bad thing because the competition becomes more difficult for each of them.

Among the comics show airing right now, Constantine TV series is probably the one that needs to do more work. The NBC series, based from Hellblazer and already had an adaptation with the same name starring Keanu Reeves, is only in its first season. It received minor setback a few weeks ago after its mother network decided to limit its episode to 13.

Matt Ryan, who plays the title role, is confident that his show will be back for a second season. As for competing with The Flash and Arrow, he doesn't mind. He thinks Constantine TV series can go toe-to-toe if given the chance because they are of different genre.

"This is a different kind of genre of comic book show, that's what makes it unique. Constantine's not a superhero, he's a working class anti-hero, he's a man's man," the Constantine star said in an interview with The Mirror.

"The early comic books were political as well, and that sets it apart. The fact that he's got this twisted, tormented soul and sticks his middle finger up at the devil and has this cynical sarcasm, that's what makes it different - he's a real anti-hero."

Matt Ryan also explained that Constantine TV series has a different target market compared to The Flash and Arrow.

"In terms of the audience as well, The Flash and Arrow have a different kind of audience to what we're going for. Hopefully there is a big enough audience for the show to continue."
