It's been a stiff competition between HTC and Samsung to win the mid-range market, with their numbers of mid-range phones launched this year the HTC Desire 820 and the Samsung Galaxy Alpha are the tough contenders.

In terms of their designs, Samsung has stepped it a notch. The Korean tech giant has revamped its phones as the Galaxy Alpha has aluminum metal frame like the iPhone 5 but a "cheap-feeling plasticky smartphones" because its back is still plastic, and dubbed as an iPhone copycat. It has a 4.7inches screen and supports HD resolution (720×1280 pixels at 312 ppi) instead of FHD resolution.
On the other hand, the HTC Desire 820 is clad in a dual tone plastic shell. It has a dimension of 157.7x78.7x7.7mm and weighs 155grams and sports a 5.5inch 720p screen display with 271ppi.

While, HTC Desire 820 is packed in a plastic shell, under its hood is a powerful 64-bit capable processor of an octa- core with a quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 and quad core 1GHz Cortex-A53 CPU. It is supported by a Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 chipset. Backed up by a 2GB of RAM and Adreno 405 GPU. It offers a 16GB and 32GB internal storage, and expandable via a microSD.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha on the other hand, has an inferior processor of 32bit Exynos 5 Octa 5430 processor with four cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four cores clocked at 1.3GHz, and paired with Mali-T628 MP6 graphics and 2GB of RAM.
It has an internal memory of 32gb and does not support micro sd expansion.
Both phones are shipped running on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat with HTC Sense 6.0 user interface on the HTC Desire 820.

The HTC Desire 820 sports a 13 mega pixels rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, HDR, HD video and image recording and an 8MP front camera. The best choice for the selfie fanatics.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha has a 12 megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 2.1 megapixel front camera with Beauty Face, Dual Camera, HDR (High Dynamic Range), Panorama, Selective Focus, Shot & More and Virtual Tour options.
Even though the HTC Desire 820 has higher camera specs, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is one of the few devices that offers a 4k video shooting mode.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha features finger print scanner that can unlock the phone itself or when in private mode; heart rate monitor along with S health apps; and Ultra Power save mode. These features packed in a mid-range phone are a bit pricey at $530 on Amazon.
The HTC Desire 820 lacks these features, but its superior processor makes it a better buy, priced cheaper at around $350.
