One of the automotive world's most anticipated releases, the Acura NSX supercar (Honda NSX in the Japanese market) will be unveiled for the first time in January at the North America International Auto Show, to be held in Detroit.
The first generation NSX which was originally produced in 1900 by Japanese automaker Honda was a V6 mid-engine, rear-wheel drive supercar. It gained its notoriety in the motorworld as one of world's most reliable and affordable cars in it's era, aimed to compete against the Ferrari 348 in both performance and price.
Today, the first NSX is still prized by owners as one of the rarest and exotic cars to be manufactured.
News of the NSX's successor first came in December 2007 when American Honda CEO, Tetsuo Iwamura announced an unamed supercar powered by a massive V10 engine would be introduced in 2010.
In September 2011, the first incarnation of Honda's mystery supercar made an appearance in Marvel's The Avengers, driven by Robert Downey Jr. who plays Tony Stark in the film. The car was specifically made for the movie, replacing his Audi R8 which he has made popular in Iron Man and Iron Man 2.
Acura then followed up with a concept car which debuted at 2012's Detroit Auto Show, where Honda Motor Co. President Takanobu Ito officially announced that the second generation NSX would launch three years after.
"The next generation NSX is going to deliver extreme supercar performance for the street and for the track," John Mendel, executive vice president of the automobile division for American Honda, told reporters in Detroit Tuesday. "And an all new engine made into a three-motor sport hybrid system truly delivers a new sports car experience." (quote taken from Detroit News)
Acura also provided the public with a sneak peek video to celebrate the arrival of the new NSX:
The hybrid vehicle will run on three motors and will feature two turbochargers and will be manufacture exclusively in Marysville, Ohio in their new Performance Manufacturing Center.
Acura/Honda plans to reclaim the NSX's old glory in this second generation model. Acura will unveil the NSX on January 12 at the Detroit Auto Show with a streaming video of the press conference made available to the public live at youtube.com/Acura.
