It has not been a smooth ride for the cast and crew of "The Interview". Last week, the chance of Seth Rogen and James Franco's controversial comedy film of being released looked very bleak. But things took a turn just a few days ago and now, you can watch the long-awaited film without even having to get up from your bed.
Just a day after the news of the movie being shown in selected theaters around the country broke out, Sony gave the public more good news - the film will also be made available online, via Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft's Xbox Video, and SeeTheInterview.com.
The studio revealed that the comedy film will stream beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Time and 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Christmas Eve. Furthermore, the fans can now even rent the movie for only $5.99, or if that's not enough, they can purchase an HD version for only $14.99.
"It has always been Sony's intention to have a national platform on which to release this film," Sony CEO Michael Lynton said in a release. "With that in mind, we reached out to Google, Microsoft, and other partners last Wednesday, Dec. 17, when it became clear our initial plans were not possible. We are pleased we can now join with our partners to offer the film nation-wide today."
The CEO even mentioned the "assault" inflicted upon Sony "by those who wanted to stop free speech," adding that he hoped the "path of digital distribution" would allow the film "to reach as many people as possible on opening day."
"While we couldn't have predicted the road this movie traveled to get to this moment, I'm proud our fight was not for nothing and that cyber criminals were not able to silence us," Lynton stated.
Besides the film's digital release, "The Interview" will also be shown in more than 300 theaters in the U.S. nationwide.
