For those who aren't quite familiar with the Civil War arc - Conflict began with the casualties of the battle between Nitro and the New Warriors. Following the death of civilians and school children, the U.S. government proposed the "Superhumans Registration Act", which required all beings with superhuman capabilities to expose themselves and offer their powers in service to the government. This resulted in a division of earth's heroes into two alliances: The Anti-Registration Act and The Pro-Registration act; Tony Stark being in favor of the latter.
Rogers, who is against the passed law thinks it threatens civil liberties, making his fellow Avenger his enemy.
Robert Downey Jr., who in initial negotiations of appearing in the third installment immediately wanted a bigger part, a move which didn't please Marvel chief Ike Perlmutter, decided to cut the actor out from the film altogether.
But Kevin Feige was determined to make the crossover happen despite Perlmutter's decision. Here's the scoop via an exclusive by Variety:
"The executive needed his boss to see the big picture, considering the introduction of the Civil War story is seen as a way to drive the plots of sequels and new franchises for the next seven years"
"The deal is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America's alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.
It has also been reported that Daniel Brühl has signed up for "Civil War" and rumored to be playing a villain in the upcoming film. The German actor followed up on his success with Inglorious Basterds with 2013's Rush, where he played the role of 1970's Formula 1 racing driver Nikki Lauda and his intense rivalry with British playboy James Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth. Brühl has made his point that he is a highly bankable actor in not only in his homeland but also in Hollywood.
