A lot has been going on with the Star Trek's next installment as-of-now titled Star Trek 3. Initially it was reported that J.J. Abrams, the man responsible for the first two films is dropping out to fulfill his commitments with Star Wars Episode 7, being replaced by Roberto Orci, who himself gave up an upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot from Lionsgate Pictures. Orci would've gotten his directorial debut with Star Trek 3, but also stepped down from the directors chair leaving hardcore Trekkies, fans and moviegoers wondering who would take lead of the project. It was quick for rumors to spread that the reason was Paramount wasn't too happy with Orci's current script despite his involvement as co-writer in the first two films.
Last week, Paramount has announced news that they have found their new director in Justin Lin of "Fast & Furious" fame, also giving the movie an official Summer 2016 release date. Orci however, will still be on board with co-writers Partick McKay and John D. Payne; the movie is set to start production next year.
Lin, before getting on board the "Enterprise" was slated to direct a follow up to Bourne Legacy, with an expected July 2016 release date attached to it.
In the meantime, here's Orci explaining the third movie's plot in a podcast interview for Humans From Earth:
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."
Star Trek 3 (not it's official title) will arrive in theaters in 2016, conciding with the franchise's 50th anniversary.
