The 1985 adventure-comedy returns after decades and is finally in the works! "The Goonies 2" sequel release date, cast and other details surface online, including news about original cast members Sean Astin, Corey Feldman and Josh Brolin involvement.
Development of "The Goonies 2" began as early as 2004, with lead cast member Sean Astin confirming that indeed a sequel was in the works. However, another decade after and there's still no concrete development news on the 80s cult classic. Apparently, director Richard Donner has been lobbying for the sequel however not everybody both in the cast and production are keen to bringing out "The Goonies 2".
Apart from the now big names involved in the production of "The Goonies 2", reports surface online reveal that world-renowned director and producer Steven Spielberg is involved in the cult classic as well. "The Goonies" was based on a story conceptualized by Steven Spielberg himself, and penned down by screenwriters Chris Columbus.
Richard Donner talks about "The Goonies 2" and Steven Spielberg's involvement in the upcoming sequel saying, "Hopefully we're going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don't do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he's right on."
"The Goonies" cast members were led by Sean Astin who is known for his work in "The Lord of the Rings" franchise as Samwise Gamgee. Other main characters were portrayed by Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and John Matuszak.
In "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" Josh Brolin celebrated the 30th anniversary of "The Goonies" shares a bit on the sequel's development: "It's gotten to the point where they have said it so many times where I'll be this character. I would do it! I would do it. But every five years, I keep hearing that we're going to do it, and then I'm like-and then finally, when you hear something like Richard Donner saying...but it's on TMZ, so you can't believe it. It's like, 'Yes! We're going to do it!' And I'm like, 'It says TMZ on the bottom, man!"
While there remains no official news on returning characters or release date, at least fans are certain that "The Goonies 2" is in the works. Hopefully soon, news on production details, release date and cast members are unleashed as Goonies fans could no longer wait, and neither could the cast members.
