Android has a bigger U.S. market share than market share percentage of all the other mobile operating systems combined, with 51.8 percent. Apple iOS is in second place with 34 percent, RIM Blackberry 9 percent, Windows Mobile 3 percent and Windows 7 1.3 percent.
Of 51.8 percent share Android has, 17 percent comes from Samsung, which is also largest manufacturer of Android based phones, followed by HTC and Motorola.
Meanwhile, as of June 2012, 54.9 percent of all mobile subscribers now own smartphones, as compared to March 2012, when 50.4 percent of Americans had already jumped on the smartphone bandwagon.
Overall, among all the smartphone owners, Apple has the highest manufacturer share of smartphone handsets. Now that Samsung's Galaxy S III is launched and Apple's iPhone 5 release date is rumored this fall, the numbers may change drastically. Samsung also makes the most popular Windows Phones, though the splits there were much more even: Samsung had .5 percent of the overall market, followed by .3 for Nokia and .5 percent for HTC.
Struggling Research in Motion's BlackBerry phones were in third place, with around 9 percent of the manufacturer market, a number the company hopes to boost with the introduction of BlackBerry 10 next year.
