During Carl Pistorius' interview with YOU Magazine, he shared what really happened during the controversial birthday visit he and Aimee had with their brother last November. He also shared more of Oscar Pistorius' update on prison life.
Reports of the Blade Runner receiving special treatment had been addressed by Aimee Pistorius in a long Twitter post that detailed what really happened during her brother's birthday.
She maintained that they strictly follow visitation rules at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria despite claims of the opposite. Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.
The elder Pistorius brother, meanwhile, revealed a morbidly funny anecdote about the visit last November.
According to Carl Pistorius, he and Aimee brought in helium balloons to show their brother through the glass during their 45-minute visit that day. The mini-celebration, however, caused a bit of commotion.
"Then suddenly, there's a loud bang, giving everyone a fright," Carl said. "The prison guard reaches for his pistol, me and Aimee dive to the floor, unsure if a shot has been fired."
Later on, they realized that it was just a balloon that flew to a ceiling fan. They reportedly started laughing "until we're almost in tears."
As for some Oscar Pistorius updates on his prison life, the Paralympian's brother said that Oscar actually thought of a brilliant idea for his fellow inmates.
The Olympic runner reportedly spends 17 hours a day in his 1.8m by 3.5m jail cell. Like the other detainees, he can only go outside for an hour and exercise for another hour. He also shares the communal bathroom with just a stool installed there for his use.
With the prosecution filing for an appeal, he could be spending more time in jail than his initial five-year sentence. The athlete reportedly decided to make the best out of his current situation.
"He often gives fellow prisoners in the hospital wing, mostly recovering from tuberculosis, advice on how to exercise and to strengthen their bodies," his brother shared.
Instead of asking for birthday gifts, he asked family members to donate balls. He reportedly wanted to "involve some of his [7,000] fellow inmates in playing basketball."
Carl added, "He's encountering many beautiful stories from prisoners. There are people there who have committed crimes but whose lives have changed."
What do you think of the South African athlete's idea to help his fellow inmates?
