'Gladiator' Star Joaquin Phoenix Lied About His Engagement Just To Be Interesting

| By

Is he kidding?? Well, time to keep our gifts on hold. It appears that Joaquin Phoenix is really not going to be hitched anytime soon.

Phoenix was interviewed by late-night host David Letterman on Monday, December 8. He told the talk show host that he is currently engaged and set to wed a yoga instructor whom he didn't disclose the name. Just hours after that interview, the actor appeared on Good Morning America and admitted that he had made the entire story up.

Good Morning America had tweeted the day after, on Tuesday, December 9, that the 40-year-old actor is not really engaged and just wanted to "spice up his 'story' a little bit" to make himself look a bit more interesting. He said on the show, "I think my life's so boring, and it seemed like something exciting to talk about, and I wanted the audience to like me." He continued, "They really like people getting married," and added, "I can get engaged again, if you like."

The actor's publicist also blatantly denied that he was engaged and told the U.K.'s Independent that the entire story was just "a joke." According to the rep, "Joaquin has an extraordinary and spontaneous sense of humor but it is not true."

Well, his tall tale looked very descriptive. In the Late Show, he gave a fictional account of how he fell in love after he attempted to do a yoga position which he called "harnessing the hog." He said, "First we do these breathing exercises and I go, 'I can do this'...and then she says we are going to get in the first position -- the 'harnessing of the hog'. Before I can say, 'Who is the hog,' she grabs me...[and] it's a compromising and vulnerable position, and she gets a strap and puts it [around me]...and she's thrusting. And I go, 'Oh, no! My back pain!' And she goes, 'No, that's your emotional back pain.'"

In the end he said that they started dating. He continued, "I think she's the one. I proposed to her and she said yes. If everything works out...so far, so good."
