If you haven't taken the time to scan your computer for malicious software infections, you may want to do so before Monday when the "Internet Doomsday" hits.

At 12:01 a.m. EDT, computers infected with the "DNS Changer Trojan" malware will all lose Internet service when the safety net system the FBI has been using to keep them connected to the Internet since last year are shut down.

The DNSChanger was created by a criminal enterprise and what it does is interfere with all of your online activity by invisibly redirecting your Internet service to use the crime syndicates own set of domain name servers.

The FBI is still urging users to visit https://www.dcwg.org, a website run by its security partner, to find out whether their computer is infected and how to fix the problem.

After July 9, any computers still infected will not be able to access the internet. Many people still don't know whether or not their computers have been affected.

If you see a green background, you're safe, but if it's red, you have been infected. If your computer has the DNSChanger malware, you'll be provided links to resources to remove it.

According to the FBI, there are about 277,000 around the world, down from about 360,000 in April. There are an estimated 64,000 infected computers in the United States.

t its peak, DNS Changer infected an estimated 4 million computers around the world, earning the criminals who developed it some $14 million. The number of infections has since receded.
