Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced that they will be divorcing after five years of marriage, People Magazine confirmed on Friday.
Cruise and Holmes, who have a six-year-old daughter Suri, were married at an Italian castle in November 2006, after the birth of their only child. Cruise as two adopted children with his second wife, Nicole Kidman, Isabella and Conor. Academy-Award-nominated Cruise, who will be celebrating his milestone 50th birthday next week, was first married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990; this was the first wedding for Holmes, 33.
"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes's attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People magazine. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
Cruise recently told People magazine that he was happy with the three children he has, with Kidman amd Holmes. The eldest, Isabella, is 19, Conor is 17, and Suri, Cruise's only biological child, is 6.
"I'm enjoying every second with Suri that I have. And I'm enjoying the relationship with my older kids, and the way it is right now," he told People magazine.
Cruise and Holmes reported did sign a prenuptial agreement, according to entertainment blog TMZ, and that the couple's net worth is around $275 million, though Cruise contributed to the majority of that.
Cruise is currently starring in the musical theatrical release of "Rock of Ages." Holmes was a notable absence during his promotion of the feature, which included press junkets and red carpet premieres. The couple had not been seen together since February at the Academy Awards, said TMZ.
At the moment it is unclear if divorce papers have been filed in court, noted TMZ. There was also no reason given for the divorce, outside of the statement released by Holmes' lawyer.
Cruise was mostly recently seen shooting his new feature "Oblivion" in New York in early June, and currently in Iceland. Holmes has been seen around New York City with daughter Suri.
