Information on the plot of the upcoming seventh installment of Star Wars has been scarce since its announcement that Disney has acquired the franchise; only a few leaked photos of filming on set and a few tidbits from the man helming the project, Star Trek director J.J. Abrams. (Abrams has since handed the third Star Trek film over to writer Roberto Orci)
Even though filming has wrapped up there is little we know about the film's storyline, but what is know is that the new movie will bear the subtitle "The Force Awakens". The official Star Wars page has already confirmed this, along with a note congratulating the filming crew.
This is great news for fans and followers of the saga; unfortunately, this is all the news so far since filming has wrapped. What is known is that "The Force Awakens" is only a part of a trilogy and also a part of a six-movie installment that includes three spin-offs.
It has also been reported that Episode XIII is already in development, with "Looper" director Rian Johnson on writer/director duties.
Here's a list of the chronological order of the films (via Screen Rant):
- Star Wars - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
- Star Wars - Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
- Star Wars - Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
- Star Wars - Episode 4: A New Hope
- Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back
- Star Wars - Episode 6: Return of the Jedi
- Star Wars - Episode 7: The Force Awakens
- Star Wars - Episode 8: TBD
- Star Wars - Episode 9: TBD
Stars appearing in Episode 7 include the old characters reprising their roles: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill as well a new talents such as Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver and Oscar Award winner Lupita Nyong'O.
In line with the Jurassic World teasers and full trailer that was released only days ago, J.J. Abrams and the rest of Lucasfilm has decided to release the first look trailer for Episode 7; Abrams, who confirmed the trailer on his Twitter confirmed the news on Thanksgiving Day (What a better way to celebrate, indeed.)
Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens is slated to open in theaters December 18, 2015.
