T-Mobile Lets Customers Know When They’re Getting Reduced Data Speeds

T-Mobile will start informing its customers of their data speeds through a link to a speed test that will go into effect in January next year, as per a new agreement with the Federal Communications Commission, The Verge reports.

T-Mobile will now provide customers with a link to a speed test so that they will be aware about what kind of service they're getting.

T-Mobile plans originally provide users with slower data speeds once they consume their allotment of high-speed data.

However, users have been complaining that running a speed test would not show how fast their current service is but would instead show how the overall speed of the network.

"The FCC is committed to ensuring that broadband providers are transparent to consumers. I'm grateful T-Mobile has worked with the FCC to ensure that its customers are better informed about the speeds they are experiencing," FCC chairman Tom Wheeler says in a statement. "Consumers need this information to fully understand what they are getting with their broadband service."

Other companies have also been getting an overhaul after the FCC conducted investigations on the speed reduction practices of different wireless carriers.

On October, Verizon discontinued its practice of suppressing the speeds of customers on its unlimited data plans.

For the meantime, T-Mobile will carry out several efforts in order to inform customers about their data speeds.

The company will be sending its customers a text message to alert them when they have already consumed all of their high-speed data and when they would be moved to reduced speeds.

Aside from that, the wireless carrier would also clarify what types of data speeds the customer would receive by updating its web site to inform users about speed test policies and how customers can check their data speeds on their mobile devices.
