"Into the Woods" producer Marc Platt talks Tony Award Winning musical "Wicked" film adaptation and reveals development details and release date.
A year after it's debut on Broadway, the Tony Award Winning musical "Wicked" has been in film development since 2004. It wasn't until 2012 that producer Marc Platt ("Into the Woods") came onboard the project that news of development furthered. To date, apart from development details and a sense of the release date, news surface online on possible cast members. While Broadway-turned-Hollywood actors Idina Menzel ("Frozen") and Kristin Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies") are the original and favorite cast leads of "Wicked", they won't be on the big screen.
Early this year on an episode of "Watch What Happens; Live" Idina Menzel who plays Elphaba also shared details of the upcoming "Wicked" movie adaptation. She says that upon the "Wicked" release date, audiences will less likely to see her and Kristin Chenoweth to reprise their roles from Broadway (as the original cast members) as they will be too old for the characters.
In a recent interview with ComingSoon.net, "Into the Woods" producer Marc Platt talks about the upcoming "Wicked" movie and at least a bird's eye view of the development, including the release date. He says, "The movie of Wicked is still a number of years down the line," he told us. "We've just started its development, because the show's still so strong with eight or nine companies around the world. That's coming in the future. That's why I haven't been in a hurry, because it works so well on stage and audiences are enjoying it. It's not a timely story, it's a timeless sorry, so I've been very sanguine to let folks explore it theatrically and when we're ready we'll make a movie."
"Wicked" is based on Gregory Maguire's novel, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" that focuses on Elphaba, the green skinned witch of Oz. While Dorothy's story tells of the wickedness of the green witch, "Wicked" shows that humanity of Elphaba, and what really (supposedly) happened before that dreadful day in Kansas City. "Wicked" is story about friendship and courage, between Elphaba and the good witch, Glinda.
