Apple kicked off its annual WWDC on Monday with announcements of new products and software, including iOS 6, OS X Mountain Lion, new MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air. The iOS 6 beta has been released for developers and will finally hit the market in fall 2012. Based on the historical release date of iPhone and iOS, iPhone 5 is likely to be released with the new iOS.
Initial release date of iOS and iPhone sorted by generation
Generation | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
iOS | June 29, 2007 OS X for iPhone 1.0 | July 11, 2008 iPhone OS 2.0 | June 17, 2009 iOS 3.0 | June 21, 2010 iOS 4.0 | October 12, 2011 iOS 5.0 |
iPhone | June 29, 2007 iPhone Original | July 11, 2008 iPhone 3G | June 19, 2009 iPhone 3GS | June 24, 2010 iPhone 4 | October 14, 2011 iPhone 4S |
From the above table, we can see that each generation of iPhone came not greater than three days after the same generation of iOS was released.
As each generation of iPhone was released with new generation of iOS, it's safe to guess that iPhone 5 will be released in the same day or immediately after the release of iOS 6.
Rumors say iPhone 5 will be available someday in September or October. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes there is a very good chance iPhone 5 will be released in early September.
Though iPhone 5 was not mentioned in the keynote speech of Tim Cook, we still hope to find more information about the new iPhone in the rest of WWDC period.
So far speculations of the new smartphone include an enhanced four-inch display, capabilities of 4G LTE network, a more powerful battery and an A5 processor.
