Marvel Studios may have expected Guardians of the Galaxy to be a hit, but maybe not as huge as being the 2nd biggest film of 2014 to date. The overwhelming success of the movie might have driven Marvel to push for its 2nd installment at an earlier date than expected, as well as naming other Marvel movies for release such as Inhumans and Captain Marvel.
Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn, along with his team, are reportedly in the works for the movie's plot, which should be in alignment with the story of The Avengers: Infinity War, to put the main characters in play with the rest of Marvel superheroes.
In an interview with Gunn by Screenrant, he revealed that there will now be 2 female characters who will be part of the core team in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. So who are the returning characters apart from the main 5 heroes? "Yondu and Kraglin, the Ravagers. And I love Nebula. I think that she is underutilized in the film. I want to see more of her, " Gunn revealed. Moreover, the filmmaker also mentioned it is not the end yet for The Collector. "He'll reappear. I don't know if he's gonna [be in] the next one. I do think his story is really compelling, and I think he's one of those very interesting shades of gray characters," Gunn said.
The filmmaker has not yet disclosed the specifics of the movie plot but he mentioned that the new team will have to face "new threats" in this upcoming movie. Add to that, it will not focus on each individual's story but more about the universe, in preparation for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Gunn also shared that the movie's sequel will be done differently, even in selecting songs for its soundtrack. "I would say the main thing is: Don't just copy yourself, which is what a lot of sequels do. And in some cases it works. I think Guardians, at the end, is not the structure of a comic book movie, it's not the structure of an action-adventure, it's not the structure of a comedy. It's the structure of a family drama. So how does that play itself out?" Gunn explained.
