Luther TV Series To Have An American Adaptation, See What Idris Elba's Role Will Be

| By

House of Cards, Wild at Heart, Mistresses, Being Human, Gracepoint - these are just some British series that were adapted by several American television networks. Some of them were successful, some failed big time. Now, another critically acclaimed TV show from Great Britain will travel its way to the American households. Luther, which starred veteran actor Idris Elba, is reportedly up for an adaptation to be done by Fox.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed on November 18 that Fox has a 'hefty' plan for a Luther TV series adaptation. It wrote:

"Following this season's Broadchurch adaptation, Gracepoint, Fox is targeting Luther for its next British remake.

The network has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment to Luther, an adaptation of the BBC's Emmy-nominated drama series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Fox's remake is based on the format created by Neil Cross and centers on John Luther (Idris Elba), a detective dedicated to solving crimes who finds his commitment to his duties both a blessing and a curse."

Idris Elba, who won a Golden Globe Award and two NAACP Image Awards for his role in Luther, will be on the show. However, it is not for the lead role. He will only act as one of the executive producers.

"Cross is on board to pen the script and executive produce the Fox take, which hails from 20th Century Fox Television, Chernin Entertainment and original producers BBC Worldwide Productions. Chernin's Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, BBC's Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner and Elba are also attached to executive produce," the Hollywood Reported added about the Luther adaptation.

Luther TV series lasted for three seasons with a total of 14 episodes. The show received 95% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes for its first season while the second got 100% approval rating.

Fox is not the first to bet on an adaptation of Luther. In a deal with production firm Sreda, Russian TV network Channel One also struck a contract to remake the Idris Elba-starrer psychological drama. Luther the Russian version will be called 'Klim' and will have eight episodes. Sreda general producer Alexander Tsekalo even called its upcoming Luther adaptation as their own Sherlock, another ultra successful BBC mini-series.

"Everyone's looking for the next Sherlock, and we think Klim, our version of Luther, will be it!" he said.
