Having already opened 900 new stores around the world this year, SUBWAY plans to increase the number of locations in North America in the coming months, aiming to hit 1,200 stores in the United States and Canada by the end of 2012, the franchise said in a press release Friday.

SUBWAY holds the title of the world's largest restaurant chain, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal, and the brand's plan to expand its numbers this weekend include a booth at the ICSC RECon convention, being held this weekend in Las Vegas from May 21 -23, 2012. SUBWAY representatives will meet with potential franchise and future store owners at a booth set up at the convention in order to increase the number of restaurants, famous for its foot-long hero sandwiches, in as part of their plans of expansion, noted the press release.

"To continue to provide career opportunities to entrepreneurs and offer our world famous submarine sandwiches, which includes a wide range of healthier meal options, to an ever increasing consumer base, more than 100 Subway developers, field staff and leasing specialists from all across North America will be attending the event," Chris Kan, Training and Business Promotion Specialist for Subway Real Estate, LLC, commented on for the press release. "We will be looking for sites and ready to make deals."

Since January, nearly 900 new stores opened in 2012 in 58 countries, 42 U.S. states, and seven Canadian provinces, listed the press release. Overall, 25,000 SUBWAY shops, as little as 100 square feet to as massive as 5000 feet wide, can be found in the United States and 100 countries worldwide, taking up more than 43 million square feet of property around the world.

Given the store's ability to function in a small space, SUBWAYs can be found, according to the press release, in "unique locations include an automobile assembly plant in Ohio; a new car showroom, and a brewery in California; a church in upstate New York; a combination laundry and tanning salon in Wisconsin; several high schools in Virginia; and a floating restaurant aboard a river boat in Germany."
