It took 20 years to see a sequel of Dumb and Dumber, the hit road comedy film that starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The 1994 film was a huge success as it earned $247 million from a $17 million budget. It's success even spanned to the television as it was adapted into an animated series by ABC. So fans are wondering, why do it only after two decades?
There are many reasons why a Dumb and Dumber sequel didn't push through in the wake of its success. Both and Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey are notorious for not doing a sequel. For Carrey, the only exception for him was Ace Ventura. He insists, however, that he studies things thoroughly before giving them a green light.
"I like to wait until the executives pass on, before I do a sequel. I prefer that. I like to bury them, and then do the sequel," the 52-year old Canadian-American said in an interview with Collider.
Carrey added that the Dumb and Dumber to movie was a "fan-driven thing. They wouldn't leave us alone."
Daniels thinks the same. He believes it is fans that made the sequel possible. He even described Dumb and Dumber To to his current TV series The Newsroon, which debut on Monday.
"I haven't done much of anything, at all, so it was very nice. To be honest, it was a little bit like The Newsroom. That was the closest sequel experience I've had. To come back a second season and a third season is sequel-like. When we got the call to do this, it was like doing more seasons of The Newsroom, so it wasn't that jarring. I think the reason why this sequel happened was because, over the years, the fans came coming up to both of us."
Dumb and Dumber To will hit theaters on November 14. Aside from Carrey and Daniels, the film also stars Laurie Holden and Kathleen Turner.
