Before, levitation above the ground is a dream-to-be-seen only in films through adding visual effects, but now, that dream is coming to reality as Hendo introduces the world's first real hoverboard!
A Hoverboard or hover board is a levitating (hovering) board that resembles a skateboard without wheels that is used for personal transportation in the films "Back to the Future Part II" and "Back to the Future Part III"; through special effects the film-makers depicted the boards hovering above the ground.
But the Hendo board is the first of its kind. It works by creating a magnetic force between the board and the surface it's floating over, generating a roughly one inch gap between the board and the floor. It's intended to be self-propelled but using the magnetic motors to direct the force in certain directions can allow the board to be controlled remotely.
With this you can float 1 inch above the ground and feel something amazing- a light springy bounce, you're bouncing on air!
Arx Pax founder and Hendo inventor Greg Henderson says it's something the company is working on. "We can impart a bias," he tells me, pointing out pressure-sensitive pads on the hoverboard's deck that manipulate the engines. "We can turn on or off different axes of movement."
The Hendo Hoverboard is a not-yet completed project, because it needs much budget and some finishing and additional features, and through online, Hendo Hoverboard asked for help:
With the support of the Kickstarter community, we all can. We need your help to put the finishing touches on the Hendo Hoverboard, to help us produce them, and to create places to ride them.
So if you can't shred a halfpipe with one of these, but you can still show your support for Hendo with one of our Betaboards instead. The Betaboard is a smaller version of our hoverboard that floats on a magnetic base. It uses a different type of levitation than our technology, based on electromagnetic stabilization. It cannot be moved around too quickly and needs to stay plugged in, but it's perfect for any desk and makes a great gift!
In theory, the Betaboard should float forever, as long as it's plugged in and not disturbed too much. It holds about 8 ounces/200g.
Be a floating superhero this Halloween!
