Katheryn Winnick's Lagertha is not a typical woman. She is brave, a fighter and strong-willled. However, before she got to that level, she underwent major struggles and hurts. She was a wife who was emotionally and physically abused by her partners. Katheryn Winnick sat down with Hey U Guys for an interview when a crew from the entertainment website visit the set of Vikings Season 3. There, the actress explained why Lagertha chooses to stay despite being unfairly treated.
The issue of domestic violence is something that society is yet to solve and for Winnick, Lagertha should be the kind of woman that every abused wife should be. She was asked by the interviewer how would the former wife of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) justify her martyrdom. Although Winnick said that it would be difficult, she insisted that the abuse and betrayal she experienced is what makes her strong.
"It's interesting because we had to create a strong back story about why Lagertha would put herself in this situation. Maybe she didn't know about it in the beginning, and maybe she did it for her son, but I really tried to craft something that would work for me. But she definitely gets her strength within that, and does what she has to do without giving it away," she said.
In Vikings Season 3, the show will pick up from where they left off. That means Lagertha will still find herself a stranger in her former home because Ragnar now has Princess Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) as his wife. Winnick said that Lagertha will remain as a pissed off woman.
"Yeah, what woman wouldn't be pissed off? Season two picks up exactly where we left off in season one. There are a lot of things that are still up in the air - unresolved issues specifically about the fact that Ragnar cheated on her. I find out in the first episode of season two that there is a baby on the way, and so that changes everything for Lagertha as to what she is going to do, and where she is going to go."
Aside from a pissed of Lagertha, things to expect from Vikings Season 3 are characters about to die, more land to invade and more wars.
