Amazon has launched a new electronic voice application that resembles Apple's Siri in an effort to assist customers with everyday tasks.
The Amazon Echo, a stationary tower that turns on when consumers say the word "Alexa," was unveiled on Thursday. The device allows users to ask questions about a diverse set of topics in a manner similar to Siri.
"We think it makes everyday life a bit easier -- when you have a question or want to do something, all you have to do is ask," a company spokeswoman told CNET.
The Amazon Echo also allows consumer to add items to their Amazon shopping cart.
The new product was subject to criticism over its limitation to hardware-most competitors that have launched similar digital assistant programs have remained within the realm of software.
However, some analysts believe Echo's distinction as a hardware-based digital assistant will "facilitate commerce."
In recent months, Amazon has been at the center of controversy surrounding its relationship with publishers and book licensing.
