Dunkin Donuts Introduces New York Pie Donut: Own Version Of Cronut

| By

Dunkin Donuts has released its own version of the cronut, called the New York Pie Donut.

The new pastry is currently available at select locations in Seoul, Jamsil and Myungdong. South Koreans like the pastry as much as New Yorkers do. Dunkin Donuts in South Korea, and the Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York, both have people lining up outside them to taste the treat. The cronuts at Dominique Ansel Bakery cost $5 each, reports ABC News.

The Croissant Donut is just one of the new products the doughnut chain plans to release in response to the disappointing results of its last quarter sales. It's a warning that the chain may not meet its long-term goals at the end of the year. Besides the change in trends, there's a rise in competitions as restaurants like Taco Bell offering breakfast menu.

Priced at $2.49 each, the Croissant Donut is 50% cheaper than the usual cronuts, but a dollar pricier than the chain's usual donuts. This can be profitable for the company.

The Croissant Donut is sticky on the outside, with layers of air pockets on the inside. It's not as flaky as a croissant, and it doesn't melt in your mouth like a really good glazed donut would. The interior is a little bit dry and chewy - it's more white bread-like than croissant-like. And unlike a Cronut, it's not filled with cream.

A statement from the Ansel Bakery stated, ""From our understanding, Dunkin Donuts item is called a 'croissant doughnut'. This is not an infringement on our trademark for CronutTM."

They said they respect large corporations who respect the trademarks of smaller companies like the New York-based bakery.
