Benedict Cumberbatch Engaged: Sherlock Star Announced Engagement To Director Sophie Hunter Via The Times

| By

Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his role as Sherlock in the BBC series of the same name, is engaged to Sophie Hunter.

Sophie, 36, is a theater director, according to the London Evening Standard.

The engagement was reportedly announced in the social diary of The Times: "The engagement is announced between Benedict son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."

Benedict's parents, Wanda and Timothy, are themselves accomplished actors.

They both made a cameo as Sherlock and Mycroft's parents in season 3 of Sherlock.

Benedict rarely speaks about his private life to the media, preferring to keep his relationships out of the spotlight.

The Sherlock star and theatre director have kept their relationship away from the glare of the media.

The couple has largely avoided being pictured together. They were first seen publicly in June at the French Open.

Cumberbatch, 38, has been Oscar-tipped for his portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

Hunter has also appeared as an actress on stage and screen, including Midsomer Murders, Torchwood and Vanity Fair.

He was previously in a long-term relationship with actress Olivia Poulet for 12 years.

No date has been given for the wedding, but for fans of the actor around the world, the news comes just weeks after other leading bachelors, George Clooney and Brad Pitt, walked down the aisle.

The couple were reported to have met during the making of the movie about naturalist Charles Darwin, Burlesque Fairytales in 2009.

Cumberbatch's rep had no more details but did add, "I am delighted to confirm this morning's announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged."
