It was July of this year when Chinese tech giant Xiaomi introduced their products to the Indian market and the response so far has been overwhelming. The brand was able to hold 8 flash sales (not including the sale on November 4) to date due to the increasingly high demand of their top seller mid-range smart phone, the Redmi 1S. Based on their data, they have sold more or less 600,000 units of Redmi 1S in India alone, and is expecting to sell 60 million units of all their products globally by the end of 2014.
Because of this phenomenal success in such a short period of time, Xiaomi's newly hired Lead Product Manager for India Jai Mani told Wall Street Journal India that they are contemplating on putting up a manufacturing base in the world's 3rd top largest smartphone market as of the year 2014. "We always thought that our manufacturing would be based out of China. But India is beginning to become so important for us that we started to think whether we should set up our own manufacturing," Jai said.
But there are things to be considered before that will happen, according to Jai. It will not be an easy task for the company since they still need to be certain that the demand will not die off. As the brand continues to innovate their products and even introduce new ones, the demand from the said market should continue. On that note, they will have to give themselves at least 6 more months to know whether it is feasible to manufacture their devices in India. Because of this possibility, Xiaomi has hired "legal advisers" to study and find out the "regulatory aspects" should they decide to push through with the plan.
Looking at the figures and the remaining products that are about to be introduced in India, the idea of assembling their products in the said country is not far-fetched. in the meantime, Xiaomi is gearing up for the launch of Redmi Note 2 this end of November and a possible launch of their new flagship phone Mi4.
