Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie is out! Nightcrawler was released just this weekend and fans have gone crazy on how this hunky actor lost so much weight on the movie!
The new crime thriller movie features a freelance journalist driven to make a living and a name for himself. In the process of attaining his goal, he uncovers some crazy crime and then ends up becoming the star of his own story.
In the film that was released in theaters by Open Road Films on October 31, 2014, Jake, who played the character of Louis Bloom, had to lose a lot of weight for the role. In the film, the actor was almost unrecognizable as he lost 30 pounds.
The movie was critically acclaimed, with most praises to Jake Gyllenhaal's outstanding performance. The film got a whopping 94% rating from Rotten Tomatoes with the site's consensus saying, "Restless, visually sleek, and powered by a lithe star performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler offers dark, thought-provoking thrills."
The Prince of Persia actor had suggested the weight loss idea and he revealed that the transformation became a "struggle" for him at the time he was filming the movie.
Jake had told Variety that he thought the character he played would look "literally and figuratively hungry." To truly get into the role, Jake decided he should shed weight from 180 pounds to 150 pounds.
The actor continued, "I would try to eat as few calories as possible. I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me."
The Jarhead actor also revealed that at times, he only eat small portions of meat or crackers and on other instances, not at all. Jake also exercised as he ran 15 miles from his house to the set.
Jake is the latest celebrity who had undergone extreme weight loss for a movie role. Other actors who have also done their fair shore are Christian Bale, who lost 60 pounds for his character in the movie The Machinist, and Matthew McConaughey, who dropped 40 pounds for his film, Dallas Buyers Club.
