With the exemption of Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman in the upcoming movie Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, not a lot of DC fans were happy with the choice on who to play the role of Batman (given to Ben Affleck),Wonder Woman (awarded to Gal Gadot), and now, even the villain Lex Luthor. Everyone seemed surprise when it was handed to Jesse Eisenberg, star of the movies "The Social Network" and "Now You See Me."
For one, Lex Luthor in the comics is a bit older than Eisenberg, so everyone is now in anticipation on how the movie will take on Luther's back story, and will he still be the same typical villain from the comics who abhors the goodness and social justice, the very things Superman is fighting for. Or will DC and Warner inject a twist to it, like how they have adapted the 2004 novel of Mark Waid titled "Superman: Birthright" where they got the idea of Superman's "S" as a symbol of hope in Krypton. Will they make Eisenberg look old, or will his being a villain more of "philosophical" than "physical?"
When asked by TotalFilm about his new role in the upcoming movie, Eisenberg remarked, "There are some indications of how the character should behave based on the script, and then as actor makes it his or her own." "I got to know one of the writers really well, Chris Terrio, and we were able to discuss things at length and figure out who this person is to create a real psychology behind what is, perhaps, in a comic book, a less than totally modern psychology. I can only say I've been asked to play an interesting role: a complicated, challenging person," he added.
On how he landed the part, he said, "They asked me if I wanted to play the part before they sent me the script. I'm not sure how it worked, but it's something I read with the understanding that I could do the role," "You know, they don't just hand the scripts out. But I really liked it on its own terms. I would do it if it was for free and it was tiny."
We will have to see how Eisenberg will give life to the character of Lex Luthor and we sure hope it will not disappoint DC fans. After all, he was applauded in his performance on his recent movies and was even nominated for Best Actor for the film "The Social Network" back in 2011.
