The Expendabelles, an Expendables' all-female version spin-off is confirmed to be filmed!
Sylvester Stallone, director of the first Expendables film, and one of the stars of the 'Eighties action heroes united' franchise, has confirmed The Expendabelles, to start filming. Blonde's Robert Luketic is set to direct the film officially.
A somewhat less than promising plot summary for the project was released back in February:
"When America's Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world's top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world's deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator - and instead save the scientist and the day."
Stallone said while he's at the London premiere for the latest instalment in the action series, The Expendables 3:
"With Expendabelles you've got a situation where we're in unchartered waters to put all women together and think 'will that really work?' We don't just want to use the name - it needs to be something that can hold its own."
Stallone also joked about how he would love to see his on-screen wife (Sigourney Weaver) to play:
"Are the Expendabelles really part of a divorce where Sigourney Weaver, whose my wife, inherited half the Expendables ... she'd get the house, the kids and my mercenaries."
Avi Lerner, who produced all three of the Expendables films, revealed that filming for The Expendabelles will begin early 2015, stating: "We are writing the final lines of the script, we've got lots of ideas about who is going to be in it, and we plan to start shooting next year. That's all I can say. "
ExpendaBelles script is being written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith (Legally Blonde, The Ugly Truth).
According to Deadline, Lerner mentioned that negotiations are ongoing with several name actresses interested in joining the project. However, the three he proved willing to mention by name include three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz (Charlie's Angel, The Counselor) and Resident Evil's leading lady, Milla Jovovich. You may remember that Jovovich was also rumored for Expendables 3, but it seems as though that film's producers decided to save her for ExpendaBelles instead.
Later announcements were speculated to be revealed earlier of 2015.
