After shocking the judges during the blind auditions and ultimately winning the competition, "The Voice Italy" nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia makes a shocking comeback! The singing sister has just announced her first record and released her first music video.
Much to our surprise, "The Voice Italy" nun Sister Cristina covered a Madonna classic. Among the many songs of the pop superstar, sister chose "Like a Virgin."
While it sounds confusing, the nun has a good explanation why she chose the song. In an interview with Italian newspaper Avvenire, Sister Cristina said "Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people [and] rescue them from their past."
She added, "We have transformed this song from the pop-dance piece, which it was, into a romantic ballad. It's something more similar to a lay prayer than to a pop piece."
The music video was uploaded on YouTube on Monday and featured the singing nun in Venice. While the setting of the video is in the same place, it's a far cry from Madonna's 1984 version and the 26-year-old nun is reportedly excited to know how the pop superstar would react when she finds out about the cover.
"I'd like to see her face when they tell her it's a nun singing," she said.
"The Voice Italy" nun wowed judges when she auditioned for the competition singing Alicia Keys' "No One." When asked by the Catholic News Agency why she decided to join the show, Sister Cristina said "I came here because I have a gift, and I want to share that gift. I am here to evangelize."
Sister Cristina's debut album has been slated for a November 11 release and will feature a combination of covers, Christian songs and original songs.
