When Michelle Obama shared some inspirational words at the 2015 Black Girls Rock last March 28, she brought the whole venue to its feet in Newark, New Jersey.
However, some people thought that America's First Lady shared some racist sentiments during her speech.
Some even believed that she shouldn't have attended the program in the first place.
"To all the young women here tonight, and all across the country, let me say those words again: Black girls rock!" she declared that night.
"We rock! We rock!" she continued. "No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful, you are powerful, you are brilliant, you are funny!"
"Let me tell you, I'm so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you. And we have such big hopes and dreams for every single one of you."
Michelle Obama's inspirational words were meant to empower young women involved with the non-profit organization, Black Girls Rock! However, several pressed individuals turned to social media to express their mixed feelings about the First Lady attending the event.
"If a white person posted this and it said white girls rock...the sh-t would hit the fan," someone reportedly commented on Mrs. Obama's Instagram account.
"Black Girls Rock is leaving out all other girls of color. Brown is a color, yellow is a color, red is a color and yes, white is still a color. One day racism will end because we no longer NOTICE the color of our fellow human beings. ALL girls rock," another commented about the organization's aim and purpose.
Although the First Lady's PR team has issued no response to the online backlash, the founder of Black Girls Rock! gave her own opinion about the negative reception.
"I thought she's a Black girl that rocks. Why wouldn't she be there?" Brenda Bond asked during an interview with WBLS (via Madame Noire).
